Sauna Storytelling Workshop: Folktales and Folk Lore with Fleur Shorthouse

Come and enjoy an immersive day of working with story and sauna

Traditional Oral Storytelling and Sauna Mastering are two discrete traditions that Fleur has brought together in her practice as a sauna storyteller which aims to connect people to nature through sauna story experiences. This workshop welcomes sauna owners and practitioners who are interested in working with story, and storytellers, who are curious to find out more about sauna storytelling.

Fleur will introduce you to a series of exercises to get your tongues wagging, take the mystery out of storytelling and build your confidence to tell traditional oral stories in and out of the sauna space! You will experiment with scents and sauna artefacts that you can use to create a 4D experience for your listeners.

Leave with a story on your tongue that you can tell to your loved ones that night.

Folktales and Folk Lore

Folktales are passed down by the people of the land, they often explain how to live by your wits and how to survive in an unjust world. Local stories, flora and fauna will be explored in this session. The focus will be on Sussex Folklore and Folktales and how to research and choose stories with skill, no matter where you live.

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and experienced storytellers. Learning to work with steam and hosting sauna rituals is a skill that will also need to be honed to combine these arts. Please check out our sauna master trainings at Wild Spa Wowo for more info, and follow @saunamasteruk on Instagram.

We will be in the outdoor spa area for some activities. Demonstrations and instructions will be given in the large stream room and group activities will happen in all three sauna spaces. So come dressed for all weathers and with your sauna bag too! We will email before the workshop with more detailed information on what to bring.

Fleur has been telling traditional oral stories for almost 30yrs, she specialises in philosophical folktales, Greek myths and fairy tales. She is artist in residence at Wild Spa Wowo in Sussex, innovating the art of Sauna Storytelling. She tells every Saturday at Stanmer Sauna Garden.
