Webinar: Embracing the heat: sauna, menopause, and the whole-body experience
Mar

Webinar: Embracing the heat: sauna, menopause, and the whole-body experience

Menopause is increasingly understood as a whole-body transition, affecting physical health, mental wellbeing, sleep, temperature regulation, mood, and identity. At the same time, sauna is gaining recognition as a whole-body practice that influences circulation, thermoregulation, the nervous system, and stress response.

Despite growing public interest in both, there is currently little shared space in the UK to explore how sauna and menopause may intersect in an informed, responsible way. This webinar focuses on the current UK context, bringing together sauna practitioners, researchers, and healthcare professionals to explore emerging perspectives on sauna and the menopausal transition.

Drawing on lived experience, current research, and practice from UK sauna spaces, the conversation will examine what we know so far, where evidence is lacking, and what questions remain.

This event is open to all genders and welcomes anyone interested in sauna, health, research, or women’s wellbeing.

Host:
Emma O’Kelly, author of Sauna: The Power of Deep Heat (2023) and Wild Sauna (2025)

Panel:

  • Lisa Zaidell, Research Scientist, London South Bank University

  • Dr Freya Bayne, Doctor of Human Sciences, London South Bank University

  • Dr Gillian Stokes, Associate Professor of Inclusive Social Research, University College London

  • Kate Rawson, sauna operator of Sauna Pause

  • Dr Imogen Murray, Specialist Doctor Sexual Health, NHS

Format: Fireside style panel discussion with audience Q&A

Alongside the webinar, an online discussion space has been created to support learning and connection before and after the event. Open internationally, it invites participants to submit questions to help guide the webinar discussion, and provides an ongoing space to share knowledge, lived experience, and emerging or ongoing research.

The British Sauna Society Christmas Party with The Bath House Group and New Docklands

The British Sauna Society Christmas Party with The Bath House Group and New Docklands

Join us for a very social and immersive evening celebrating traditional and modern bathhouse culture – Schmeissing, Pirtis and Aufguss, all led by experienced bathhouse practitioners and sauna masters. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Schmeissing is rooted in Jewish and Eastern European bathing traditions. It is an invigorating exfoliation and cleansing ritual performed in a steam room using soap, steam, and a raffia brush, followed by an ice-cold rinse or plunge. A cornerstone of traditional London bathhouse culture since the early 20th century, Schmeissing builds camaraderie, endurance, and mutual respect.

Pirtis is a Lithuanian sauna experience that combines hot steam with wellness rituals, such as body whisking with bunches of birch or oak leaves to enhance blood circulation. Steeped in ancient traditions, Pirtis provides a deeply relaxing spiritual and purifying experience.

Aufguss is a fast-growing movement in modern sauna culture designed to heighten the physical experience of sauna bathing. Water or ice infused with essential oils is added to heated stones releasing aromatic steam. The sauna master then uses rhythmic towel movements to circulate the steam, creating waves of heat and fragrance. An Aufguss session may also include music or guided breathing, transforming it into a multisensory, communal experience that refreshes both body and mind.

Venue: New Docklands Steam Baths, 30A Stephenson Street, Canning Town, E16 4SA
Nearest stations: Canning Town (Jubilee Line) or Star Lane (DLR)

Limited tickets available (early bird £60; thereafter £75).

What to bring:

  • A towel for drying off

  • A sarong or small towel to sit on in the steam room.

  • Swimwear and flip-flops or slides.

  • Comfortable clothes or a robe for post-bath relaxation.
