Talk: The rise, fall and return of Hackney's public baths

As part of the Hackney History Festival, BSS Director Gabrielle Reason will be giving a talk at the National Trust Sutton House in Homerton, exploring the origins of collective bathing and sharing insights from the recent bathing renaissance.

Before modern medicine and private bathrooms, public baths developed as a cost effective way to bring hygiene and basic health benefits to Britain’s poor. Using the Eastway Baths in Hackney Wick as a starting point, this talk explores how Hackney’s public baths emerged (and where keen-eyed observers can find the relics that remain), offering hygiene and health at a time when medical care was limited or out of reach. As the NHS arrived and bathrooms moved into the home, bath houses faded from everyday life, replaced by technologies that promised cleaner, easier, disease free living. But that rapid lifestyle change has also brought its own set of new problems, and bathing culture is enjoying a revival as an ancient solution to modern problems. Looking at historical research through a scientific lens, Gabrielle explains how Hackney's public baths help us to understand about humans and their health, and why we should be bringing them back.

Help to build a Sauna in 24 hours for Sauna Aid

The Saunaverse team needs your support, this is your invitation to donate, share, or simply follow along online.

On 23rd April from 9am, the Saunaverse team will undertake a huge feat to build and construct a fully working wood fired mobile sauna in 24 hours for Sauna Aid. That sauna will then go out with Sauna Aid to the Ukraine frontline for those that have been displaced from their communities.

Sauna Aid is a charity that builds and delivers mobile saunas to displaced communities and refugees around the world. In places affected by conflict and crisis, something as simple as warmth, recovery, and a moment of calm can make a huge difference. A sauna isn't just a luxury, it's a place to reset, to heal, and to feel human again.

The team are documenting the entire process, head to @saunaverse to follow along. They will show the challenges, the build, the sleepless night — to raise awareness for the work Sauna Aid does, and to show what's possible when people come together behind a shared goal.

At the same time, sauna is gaining recognition as a whole-body practice that influences circulation, thermoregulation, the nervous system, and stress response.

Despite growing public interest in both, there is currently little shared space in the UK to explore how sauna and menopause may intersect in an informed, responsible way. This webinar focuses on the current UK context, bringing together sauna practitioners, researchers, and healthcare professionals to explore emerging perspectives on sauna and the menopausal transition.

Drawing on lived experience, current research, and practice from UK sauna spaces, the conversation will examine what we know so far, where evidence is lacking, and what questions remain.

This event is open to all genders and welcomes anyone interested in sauna, health, research, or women’s wellbeing.
